Per Politico, GOP Rep. Liz Cheney is down 30 points in a new survey of her August primary conducted by the Club for Growth, which is opposing the embattled incumbent.
The poll, which provides perhaps the starkest illustration yet of the political peril Cheney faces this year, shows Wyoming attorney Harriet Hageman garnering 56 percent of the vote to Cheney’s 26 percent in the GOP primary. A third Republican got 12 percent support, and just 6 percent are undecided. More from Politico…
Cheney, of course, broke party ranks and voted to impeach President Donald Trump for his role in inciting a riot at the Capitol on January 6. Only nine other Republicans joined her in doing so on January 13, 2021.
Since Trump’s rise to the presidency, many in the GOP have developed a habit of labeling Republicans who are the least bit critical of the former president a RINO (Republican In Name Only).
To them, one’s ideologic conservativeness and merit as a public servant rests squarely on their adoration – or perceived adoration – of Trump.
Who cares how well they represent their constituents, right? And who cares about their commitment to upholding the Constitution and strong values?
A politician’s ideology is based on 1) their social and economic principles and 2) voting record. It has nothing to do with one’s beliefs about the conduct of another public servant.
Admiring or accepting Trump’s behavior doesn’t make one any more or less conservative or liberal.
According to the “conservative” political rating website, Heritage Action for America, Rep. Cheney, like her famous father, is a strong Republican but not a hardcore conservative.
Her lifetime conservative score of 72% is lower than Heritage’s score for the average Republican House Member (85%). But, Cheney’s score for the 116th Session of Congress is 82% and about average for a GOP House Member.
With those scores, one would be a little hard-pressed to call her moderate let alone a RINO.
She seems to be representing her red-state constituents well.
Agree with her policies or not, Cheney is a woman of principle who put her country before her party and is abiding by the Oath she took as a Member of Congress. But, unfortunately, based on her polling in Wyoming it seems most of the voters there can’t see past Cheney’s strong repudiation of Trump’s antics.
